Introduction to Your Therapeutic Journey

Embarking on therapy is a profound step towards understanding oneself, navigating challenges, and encouraging personal growth. I incorporate a variety of approaches in our sessions, drawing from established therapeutic techniques to provide holistic care tailored to your unique needs and specific journey.

  • Psychodynamic Therapy: Delving into your unconscious processes, we'll explore how past experiences might influence present behaviors, emotions, and thoughts. It's a journey to understand deeper motivations and unresolved conflicts.

  • Trauma-Informed Care: Recognizing that trauma can profoundly affect the psyche, this approach ensures that therapy is conducted with an understanding of, and sensitivity to, any past or present traumatic experiences you might have encountered.

  • Solution-Focused Brief Therapy (SFBT): Sometimes, you might need immediate tools or strategies for current challenges. SFBT centers on finding swift solutions and tapping into your inherent resources for coping and resilience.

  • Strength-Based Therapy: Instead of solely focusing on challenges or problematic behaviors, we'll identify and build upon your innate strengths, fostering a sense of empowerment and capability.

  • Cognitive-Behavioural Therapy (CBT): A hands-on approach where we'll work on identifying and reframing negative thought patterns, which can directly influence emotions and behaviors. It offers practical strategies for managing distressing or disruptive emotions.

  • Narrative Therapy: Your life story holds power. Together, we'll explore and rewrite the narratives you've formed about yourself, your experiences, and your relationships, emphasizing a story of resilience, growth, and transformation.

I aim to provide a comprehensive, individualized therapeutic experience by blending these techniques. Every person's journey is distinct, and our collaborative work will reflect the uniqueness of your experiences, aspirations, and challenges.

The Trauma Therapy Process

Introduction to Trauma Recovery

Recovery is the primary goal for people who have experienced trauma, their families, and their care providers. Recovery does not necessarily mean complete freedom from post-traumatic effects. Recovery is an individual experience and will be and look different for everyone. In general, recovery is the ability to live in the present without being overwhelmed by the thoughts and feelings of the past.

Trauma recovery is a process worked on over time and in intentional stages. Reestablishing safety is the first and most crucial step in recovery, regardless of whether the details of the trauma are ever discussed or disclosed.

Central to the experience of trauma is helplessness, isolation, and the loss of power and control. The guiding principles of trauma recovery are the restoration of safety and empowerment. Recovery is the ability to live in the present without being overwhelmed by the thoughts and feelings of the past.

Trauma Counselling Introduction

Safety and Stabilization

Trauma Recovery Stage 1

People affected by trauma tend to feel unsafe in their bodies and their relationships with others. Regaining a sense of safety may take days to weeks with acutely traumatized individuals or months to years with individuals who have experienced ongoing/chronic abuse. Figuring out what areas of life need to be stabilized and how that will be accomplished will help move toward recovery.

Trauma Recovery Stage 1

The experience of being emotionally overwhelmed by trauma is similar to a bottle of soda that's been shaken. Inside the bottle, there is a buildup of pressure. The safest way to release the pressure is to open and close the cap slowly, cautiously, and intentionally. Over time, the pressure is released carefully and in a way that is never overwhelming.

  • Someone who has experienced trauma may struggle with regulating or soothing difficult emotions in their everyday life.
  • Over time the person recovers by learning how to regulate and manage these challenging or overwhelming emotions.
Trauma Recovery: Stage 1

Remembrance and Mourning

Trauma Recovery Stage 2

In stage 2, the trauma survivor has the task of processing their trauma by making meaning from their experiences. It is essential to spend time in this phase working through the traumatic experience in small pieces. The therapist continually attends to the safety and stability of the survivor. The goal of this stage is to integrate their trauma rather than reacting to it with a fight, flight or freeze response.

Trauma Recovery Stage 2

Pacing and timing are crucial during this phase. If the trauma survivor becomes suddenly overwhelmed and emotionally flooded while talking about their trauma memories, safety and stability must be regained before they can process their story. The objective of this stage is to explore their trauma in a safe and healing environment. The crucial task is to mourn the losses associated with the trauma while maintaining a safe space to grieve, express emotions, and process what's happened.

Trauma Recovery Stage 2

Reconnection and Integration

Trauma Recovery Stage 3

In this phase, the trauma survivor creates a new sense of self and envisions a new future. This final task involves redefining oneself in the context of meaningful relationships. Through this process, the trauma no longer defines the survivor, and their experiences become essential to their past. Their trauma becomes integrated into their life story but no longer defines them.

Trauma Recovery Stage 3

The events are not forgotten, and the trauma survivor has more clarity, understanding, and meaning. They have started the process of knowing themselves at a deeper level. Resiliency begins to surface, and they learn their inner strengths outweigh external events or traumatic memories.

Trauma Recovery: Stage 3

Recovery is Unique to Each Person

Recovery is a process that’s unique to each individual. The immediate impulse of the trauma survivor is to feel well quickly and make the feelings go away. This is an entirely understandable and healthy reaction to complicated feelings. Sometimes the process feels like it’s taking too long, and at other times the trauma survivor may question if they are doing it “right.” Recovery is not the absence of thoughts and feelings associated with their trauma.

Trauma Counselling Summary

Being gentle, patient, and compassionate with yourself is essential while you move through this healing process. The ultimate goal of trauma recovery is to live with trauma without it controlling or disrupting your life. Trauma is a vital part of the human experience. Trauma is something we all share in common and traumatic events can bring us together.

You may even experience post-traumatic growth.
